The immersive journey offered along the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway on Maryland's Eastern Shore provides a poignant exploration. Through the use of virtual reality, augmented reality, and a captivating audio accompaniment, participants are guided through the terrains familiar to Tubman during her time as a slave and her subsequent flight as a young woman. It was during the years leading up to the Civil War that thousands of slaves successfully evaded bondage. However, Tubman's exceptional legacy resides in her repeated returns as a fugitive to rescue both family members and friends.
The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway earned recognition in 2009 as one of the nation's premier driving excursions, commended by the Federal Highway Administration for its striking beauty and profound historical significance. One of only 31 distinguished "All-American Roads" across the country, this self-guided scenic tour spans 125 miles through Dorchester and Caroline counties. Visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the region's Underground Railroad narratives over a few hours or spread over a couple of days. In addition to recounting Harriet Tubman's extraordinary life journey, the Byway sheds light on the narrative of slavery and the pursuit of freedom within Maryland's Eastern Shore along the Chesapeake Bay. The route navigates through a unique landscape that has remained virtually unchanged for over a century.
